Bach & Handel ~ The Twain Who Never Met
February 24, 2019, 4 pm

Billye Brown Youmans, soprano
Ruth van Baak Griffioen, recorder
Allegra Havens, violin
George Corbett, oboe
Jeffrey Phelps, cello

Join us for a fun concert featuring the music of George Frideric Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach. These world famous composers were both born in 1685, approximately 80 miles apart, yet never met one another. Their monumental contributions to the world of music continue to influence composers today. The program includes the Overture to the opera Tolomeo, arranged for solo harpsichord. Sometime during the year 1707, while Handel was in his 20’s studying in Italy he composed the solo vocal Cantata, Nell dolce dell’oblio (In sweet sleep’s oblivion), a dramatic work for soprano. Also on the program will be the sonata, Sonata in C minor, HWV 386a.

The music of Bach will include the Suite for Unaccompanied Cello in G Major, BWV 1008, the Sinfonia and aria Seufzer, Tränen, Kummer, Not (Sighs, Tears, Anguish, Trouble), from Cantata BWV 21, and the joyful aria from Cantata BWV 69, Mein Gläubiges Herze (My Faithful Heart).

Free and open to the public

Red Cross Blood Drive @ Great Bridge Presbyterian Church | Chesapeake | Virginia | United States

Red Cross Blood Drive is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5th, from 2 pm to 7 pm in the Fellowship Hall.  This is a great way to serve our community.  There is currently no substitute for donated blood for blood transfusions.  Since less than 10 percent of the US population donates blood each year, and there is a constant need for accident victims, cancer patients and others, donating is giving a precious gift.  The Red Cross separates the blood after donation into red cells, platelets, and plasma – so each donation can touch up to three lives. Signups will be in the Fellowship Hall between services or register online.

Prayer Vigil

GBPC is hosting an 18-hour prayer vigil on Wed March 6 th –  Ash Wednesday, from 6am – 12am to start off our Lenten season, as we prepare our hearts and minds to celebrate the 40 days leading up to Easter. We are seeking individuals to sign up for a 15 minute time slot, to PRAY wherever you may be at the time (home, school, work, or church).  The sign-up list is on line via VOMO and is listed under the section “church campaigns” and is notated as the “Ash Wednesday Prayer Vigil”.   We are hoping to have the full 18 hours filled up with pray-ers….so sign up for a time slot and be praying for these specific petitions:

  • Our church family to have our hearts and minds focused on Jesus throughout this Lenten season
  • Our gratitude for all God has done in our own lives, as well as for our church body at GBPC
  • Our gratitude for His gift of grace and forgiveness
  • To feel the presence of the Lord more deeply within us individually and within our church body
  • God to continue to guide the Pastoral Nominating Committee as they discern the call for the next Pastor of GBPC

THE MISSION of Great Bridge Presbyterian Church is to share the love of God and His promise of salvation with all people, equipping them to mature in Jesus Christ. Our vision focuses on the first three words of this tagline, “sharing Christ’s love.” The vision of GBPC is to share Christ’s love through one million touches in our church, our community, our country, and throughout the world. The vision statement is patterned after Jesus’ command to His disciples in Acts 1:8, that empowered by the Holy Spirit they should be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. In order to “equip God’s people,” we provide multiple ways for people to Worship, Grow and Serve–see where YOU connect!
