Katrina Disaster Relief

2010 Mission Trip: May 8-15

Since Hurricane Katrina, Presbyterian work and commitment in the Gulf Coast continues through the efforts of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA). PDA is the emergency and refugee program of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. The PDA Katrina related work is part of the collective effort for long-term recovery that continues today all along the Gulf Coast. The team from GBPC will travel to Orange Grove, a tent “village” that houses and feeds volunteers. Most of the work performed by the volunteer teams involves the rebuilding of homes including framing, roofing, drywall, flooring and painting. There is a need for skilled labor, such as electricians, carpenters, contractors, and those with construction knowledge. However, having these skills is not a requirement for being a member of a volunteer team, desirable but not a requirement. Teams also perform work related to the maintenance and upkeep of the Volunteer Village. Such tasks include yard work, camp cleanup and kitchen work to include meal planning and preparation.  Details: Minimum age is 18.
